Some weddings are defined by a place. Bickleigh Castle is unmistakably one of them: a centuries-old fortified castle set beside the river Exe near Tiverton, with an ancient detached chapel, one of the oldest in Devon, a moat, thatched Grade II listed cottages and gardens of rhododendrons and topiary. Twenty minutes from the M5, yet utterly secluded.
The Castle
Taken on an exclusive-use basis, the whole castle becomes the couple’s own. Ceremonies are held in the beamed Great Hall, licensed for up to 120 beneath its Minstrels’ Gallery and roaring log fire, or outdoors on the gazebo lawn with the Devon hills beyond, while the ancient chapel hosts blessings and humanist ceremonies.
The Banqueting Room then seats 40 to 120 for five-star wedding breakfasts, and 18 bedrooms and suites across the castle and three Grade II listed thatched cottages sleep up to 40, so the whole party stays together by the river Exe.
"The grounds and gardens are picturesque; thank you for making our wedding day so memorable."
Gardens of rhododendrons and topiary, a moat, water gardens, the river and even a tennis court complete the estate, with Exeter, Dartmoor and the Devon coast within reach, so a wedding here becomes a private, storybook Devon escape.
A Wedding at Bickleigh Castle
A castle steeped in history, exclusively yours. Bickleigh is hired privately, so the castle, gardens, moat and cottages belong to the couple and their guests. With a Great Hall ceremony, an ancient chapel and the river Exe all around, a wedding here is a characterful, romantic Devon castle celebration.
