Some weddings are defined by a building. Bovey Castle is unmistakably one of them: a Jacobean-revival manor of golden stone, built for the Hambleden family between 1906 and 1908, set in 275 acres on the edge of Dartmoor National Park. To marry here is to arrive through wrought-iron gates into one of Devon's leading luxury hotels.
There are three indoor civil ceremony rooms, the Adam Room, the Library and the Cathedral Room, each with views across the estate and Dartmoor National Park, and the Summerhouse, a quiet stone setting for an outdoor ceremony approached by a lawned aisle flanked by yew hedges and herbaceous borders. Capacities range from an intimate elopement for two in the Library, up to 50 in the Adam Room, and up to 120 in the Cathedral Room or the Summerhouse, with dining for up to 120.
After the ceremony, couples dine in the Great Western Grill, where the kitchen builds a seasonal feast menu with the Head Chef, unique to each couple, using local Devon produce. Then the celebration carries on with a castle reception complete with evening food. The hotel is also available for exclusive use, closing the doors on the outside world with the public areas and all 60 luxury rooms given over to a single celebration.
"A Jacobean-revival castle on 275 acres of Dartmoor, with three ceremony rooms, a spa, a golf course, and the whole hotel available for exclusive use."
Beyond the ceremony and the celebration, Bovey Castle is a destination in its own right. Set in 275 acres of Dartmoor, the estate offers the Elan Spa with its indoor pool, sauna and steam room, a championship golf course, falconry displays and a host of outdoor activities, with formal gardens, a stone bridge and pond, and rhododendrons in bloom. Guests stay across 60 luxury bedrooms and 22 self-catering lodges, all pet-friendly, making it an enviable setting for a wedding weekend.
What lingers is the combination Bovey Castle offers: a historic castle in the heart of Dartmoor, three ceremony rooms and an outdoor Summerhouse, fine dining and a castle reception, a spa, a golf course and falconry, and the option to take the whole hotel for yourselves. Its parent group, Eden Hotel Collection, was named AA Small Hotel Group of the Year 2024–25, and it is a five-star castle wedding where the celebration lingers long after the day itself.
