Swinton Park

The turreted castle on a twenty-thousand-acre Dales estate, where you can marry in a Ballroom, a deer-park barn or a woodland tipi, and stay the weekend.

Some castles ask you to behave. Swinton Park does the opposite. A turreted castle hotel on the Cunliffe-Lister family's twenty-thousand-acre estate near Masham, its ivy-clad round tower rising over the parkland, it has the grandeur you would expect and almost none of the stiffness. Log fires, deep sofas, long views over the lake and the fells: this is a castle that behaves like a country house, and it turns out to be exactly the right temperament for a wedding.

The estate has been in the same family for generations, and it shows in the way the place is run: seriously about the things that matter, lightly about everything else. The castle stands above its own lake, the tower doubled in the water on a still morning, with the deer park rolling away behind and the Yorkshire Dales beyond. You feel, arriving, that you have been let in on something rather than booked into it.
Ceremony & Reception Spaces
What sets Swinton apart is how many weddings it can be. Marry in a licensed room within the castle, the gold-walled Panelled Room among them, chandelier above and arched windows onto the park, then dance in the Ballroom beneath the lights. Or take the whole thing outdoors: the Deer House, an open timber barn glazed to the deer park, and the woodland tipi at Swinton Bivouac, bunting and rugs under the canvas. Grand or relaxed, formal or barefoot, the estate holds them all.
The castle takes up to a hundred guests, and it can be taken exclusively, so that for a weekend the house and its bedrooms belong entirely to you. That is the real luxury here: not a room hired for an afternoon, but a castle and an estate given over to a couple and their people, from the first drink on the lawn to the last of the party.

"A turreted castle on a twenty-thousand-acre Dales estate, licensed rooms and a Ballroom within, the Deer House and the tipi without: a Yorkshire castle wedding with the run of the estate."

Food & Wedding Dining
Then there is the estate itself, which is where a Swinton wedding stops being a day and becomes a weekend. A Country Club and Spa with indoor and outdoor pools, a hydrotherapy pool and sauna. Falconry, walks and gardens across the acres. And a cookery school in the old Georgian kitchen that is among the best known in the country, so the food, modern British and Yorkshire, built on the estate's own game and garden produce, is taken as seriously as the setting.
Accommodation
Guests stay in 42 individually designed rooms and suites across the castle and the Coach House, from turret rooms in the round tower to grand suites over the parkland, with stone cottages and woodland cabins scattered across the estate for the larger party. Nobody has to leave when the music stops; everyone wakes up in the Dales, walks down to breakfast, and does it all again the next morning.
Wedding Costs & Commercial Conditions

Castle packages at Swinton Park start from £180 per person for up to 100 guests; smaller celebrations start from £5,335 and elopements from £3,195. Full exclusive use of the whole castle, "Exclusively Yours", is a separate, larger commitment from £20,000. Catering is in-house only, through the estate's own kitchens. The LWD team makes the introduction and helps request a bespoke proposal.

A couple drawn to Swinton Park usually wants exactly this: a proper castle without the coldness, and an estate to disappear into rather than a room to hire. Vows in a Ballroom or under the trees, a first dance beneath a chandelier, a spa and a cookery school and twenty thousand acres of Dales, and 42 rooms to fall into at the end of the night: grand and warm at once, a whole weekend in the Yorkshire countryside.
