The Savoy

The Savoy was Britain's first luxury hotel. Richard D'Oyly Carte built it on the profits of the Gilbert and Sullivan operas he had been staging at the theatre next door, and he built it to a standard London had not seen: electric light throughout, lifts, and, most startling of all, bathrooms attached to the bedrooms. The builder is said to have asked whether his guests were amphibious. More than a century on, the event rooms still carry the names of the operas that paid for them.

The room everyone comes for is the Lancaster Ballroom. It runs to 476 square metres of gilded plasterwork and chandeliers, seats around 350 for a wedding banquet and takes up to 700 for a reception, which makes it one of the very few rooms in central London that can hold a large wedding without the party feeling posted to a conference centre. It does not need styling. Most couples light it and leave it alone.

Beneath the ballroom the hotel keeps a range that matters more than the headline number. The River Room is double-height and looks over Embankment Gardens to the Thames. The Abraham Lincoln Room is panelled and formal. Then come the opera rooms, the Pinafore, the Gondoliers, Princess Ida, the Mikado, the Manhattan, each of them small enough for a wedding of thirty or a dinner of twelve. A couple can marry here with four hundred guests or with their parents, in the same building, on the same licence.

The Royal Suite handles the most private version of the day. It spans half the fifth floor, has its own terrace above the river, and is licensed for ceremonies, so a couple can exchange vows in a private drawing room with the Thames behind them and never pass through a public corridor. For a second marriage, a quiet one, or a couple who simply do not want an audience, it is one of the best-kept options in London.

Dining is where The Savoy stops competing and starts winning. The Savoy Grill has been open since 1889 and is now Gordon Ramsay's; it is one of the most storied dining rooms in the country, the sort of place where the banquettes have their own history. Restaurant 1890 sits alongside it as a deliberate tribute to Auguste Escoffier, who ran these kitchens and effectively invented the modern restaurant while he was here. The River Restaurant faces the water.

Then there is the tea. Afternoon tea in the Thames Foyer is taken beneath a glass dome, around a winter-garden gazebo, and it is one of the few London rituals that has survived intact. For a wedding it is the natural shape of the day before: the bridal party in the foyer under the glass, unhurried, while the ballroom is being dressed two floors away.

The bars deserve their own paragraph. The American Bar is one of the oldest surviving cocktail bars in the world and has a claim to being the most influential; the Savoy Cocktail Book came out of it in 1930 and is still the reference. Next door, the Beaufort Bar is black and gold and built on the hotel's former cabaret stage, where Gershwin played. Between them they solve the problem every hotel wedding has, which is where the party goes at midnight.

Flowers are by Savoy Flowers, the hotel's own in-house florist, which is rarer than it sounds at this level and removes an entire supplier negotiation from the planning. The kitchens compose the menus with each couple rather than offering a card, with kosher and vegan menus available, and the cellars are what you would expect of a hotel that has been buying wine since the nineteenth century.

The wedding party stays put. There are 267 rooms and suites in two distinct registers: Edwardian, in soft greys and tangerine, and Art Deco, on the Strand side, in golds and caramels with marble bathrooms. Many face the Thames. Above them sit the signature suites, the Royal Suite with its terrace, the Art Deco Savoy Suite over the river, the Terrace Suite, and the personality suites named for the people who loved the place. Butler service comes as standard.

What genuinely separates The Savoy from the other grand London addresses is the river. Most central hotels are near the Thames; this one faces it, with Embankment Gardens in between and the bridges strung away east. And the hotel keeps its own pier. Guests can arrive by boat to a private landing in the middle of London, which is not something another ballroom on this list can offer, and it changes the first ten minutes of the day entirely.

Around the wedding, the location does the work. Covent Garden is a five minute walk, the theatres are on the doorstep, Charing Cross and Embankment are closer still, and Heathrow is about forty-five minutes. For a guest list arriving from several countries on the same afternoon, that combination of central and connected is worth as much as the ballroom.

The Savoy does not publish wedding pricing, and it is unlikely to start. Weddings are quoted bespoke by the hotel's own planners against the rooms chosen, the season, the day of the week and the guest count, and the range between a dinner for twelve in the Pinafore and a ballroom wedding for four hundred is wide enough that a published figure would mislead more couples than it helped. The conversation starts with a phone call.

What a couple is buying, in the end, is not a room. It is a hotel that has been getting large evenings right since Escoffier was in the kitchen and Gershwin was on the cabaret stage, and that still runs its own florist, its own kitchens, its own fleet of Rolls-Royce and Bentley in the court, and its own pier on the river. Very little about a wedding here is subcontracted, which is the real reason it goes smoothly.
