A Fairytale Tudor Castle in Gloucestershire

A genuine Tudor castle begun in 1511 and a retreat of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, now a Relais & Châteaux hotel near Bristol: marry beneath original Tudor ceilings, celebrate in the historic Tudor Hall, and stay in 26 bedchambers named for Tudor kings and queens, amid 15 acres of ancient gardens.

Some weddings are defined by a place. Thornbury Castle is unmistakably one of them: a genuine Tudor castle, begun in 1511 by Edward Stafford, 3rd Duke of Buckingham, the only man of his age to rival Henry VIII for wealth. After Stafford's fall the Crown seized it, and Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn used it as a beloved retreat in 1535. Today it is a Relais & Châteaux castle hotel near Bristol, where couples may marry, quite literally, where kings once stayed.

Crenellated towers, mullioned windows and original Tudor interiors have been restored to host the most romantic of celebrations. Couples marry beneath original Tudor ceilings in the licensed Tudor Hall or the panelled Library, in the Rose Garden with its gazebo within the castle walls, or in the adjacent parish church of St Mary. The historic Tudor Hall, with its tapestries and great stone fireplace, then hosts the wedding breakfast and reception, for up to around seventy seated and a hundred and twenty for an evening reception.

Dining at Thornbury Castle holds three AA Rosettes, served in the castle's historic, panelled dining rooms beneath crystal chandeliers and Tudor fireplaces, drawn from the estate's own walled kitchen garden and the finest local produce. Wedding breakfasts are served in the Tudor Hall and tailored to each couple, with celebrated afternoon tea by the fire and every dietary preference accommodated.

"A genuine Tudor castle, a retreat of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, now one of England's most romantic wedding venues."

Beyond the celebration lie fifteen acres of ancient Tudor gardens: the Privy Garden with its shrub maze and magnificent magnolia, the Rose Garden with its summerhouse and gazebo, the Courtyard Garden with its fountain, and a working walled kitchen garden whose produce reaches the table. Framed by the castle's towers and the rolling Gloucestershire countryside, the gardens give a wedding here endless settings for the ceremony and for photographs.

Guests stay within the castle walls, in twenty-six individually designed bedchambers named for Tudor kings and queens, sleeping around fifty-two, from the signature tower Catherine of Aragon Bedchamber beneath its painted ceiling to the Elizabeth of York Suite and the Catherine Howard and Catherine Parr bedchambers. Exclusive use of the whole castle and its grounds is available, so a couple and their guests may take the entire Tudor castle as their own.
