Four and a half centuries of it, standing over a pond on the edge of a Hertfordshire farm, long before anyone thought to build a pavilion beneath it or seat two hundred people around the water. Micklefield Hall is a 350-acre working estate in the Chilterns. The ceremony happens outdoors, under that tree, with the farm going on quietly around it.

Weddings at Micklefield Hall

Vows on Both Banks of the Pond.

The Temple is an open pavilion at the head of the estate pond, and it is where most couples marry. Guests sit on both banks facing the water, so the ceremony reads across the surface rather than down an aisle. It seats two hundred, it is licensed, and there is a discreet audio system so the vows carry without a speaker stack in the frame. Live musicians fit under the roof without crowding it. Then everyone walks up through the gardens to the barn.

The Table

There is no kitchen on site. Catering comes from the venue's approved list with Kalm Kitchen as the exclusive partner, which is a restriction worth knowing before falling in love with a chef, and within it the range is real: kosher catering by Feast by Ed Shaerf, James Zimmer, Phillip Small or Tony Page at £2,000 + VAT, Indian catering by Ragasaan at a £500 + VAT kitchen fee. Long tables under the trusses, candles once the light goes.

The Oak & The Pond

Four and a Half Centuries of Shade.

The oak at the top of the pond was standing before the barn was framed and it is still the thing people photograph first. The water holds it twice, once in the branches and once on the surface, which is why the autumn ceremonies here look the way they do. It is not a feature installed for weddings. It is a tree on a farm that a family decided to build a pavilion under, and then invited other people to stand beneath.

Micklefield Hall sits on Sarratt Road between Sarratt and Rickmansworth, two miles from junction 18 of the M25 at Chorleywood, in the Chiltern Hills. Heathrow is about thirty minutes away and Luton about forty, and Chorleywood is on the Metropolitan line, so a London guest list reaches a working farm in open countryside without anybody needing to stay the night. The drive in gives away nothing about how much land sits behind the buildings.

A working Chilterns estate, yours from 8am to midnight.

Venue hire at Micklefield Hall starts at £5,750 + VAT for 2026, which covers a Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday in January, February, March, November or December for up to 200 guests. A Saturday or Sunday between May and September is £13,750 + VAT. Dates in 2027 and 2028 start from £6,750 + VAT. An intimate wedding of 30 or fewer starts at £5,000 + VAT, a three-hour ceremony alone is £4,000 + VAT, and the booking deposit is £2,000 + VAT. Every figure is quoted excluding VAT and comes from the venue's own brochure. Catering is separate and comes from the approved list. The LWD team makes the introduction.

Intimate weddings of 30 or fewer start at £5,000 + VAT and a ceremony-only booking of three hours is £4,000 + VAT. All figures exclude VAT and are first-party from the venue's brochure. Micklefield Hall

It is a 350-acre working farm estate in the Chilterns that happens to hold weddings, rather than a wedding venue with fields attached. The Rankin family live in the hall, farm the land, and run one wedding a day on it. The horizon has nothing commercial on it.

Anna and Jamie Rankin founded it as a wedding venue and still live in the main house. Their son Tom and his wife Annabel manage it now, which is why the details, like the raised platform put in for the photographer, read like things somebody noticed rather than things somebody specified.

The venue names The Great Barn, The Orangery, The Temple, The Garden Room, the lawns and the rose garden across its own material, indoors and out. Micklefield Hall is approved premises under approval number 005209, expiring 14 November 2026, and is listed by Hertfordshire County Council.

A 15th-century oak-framed barn seating 200, with a roof of trusses, underfloor heating, air conditioning, a dance floor, a stage and a raised viewing platform for the photographer. Candlelight does most of the work after dark, and it is where the evening lives because amplified music cannot go outdoors.

The Orangery, brick and Crittall glass with a wood burner, is licensed in its own right and takes both the drinks reception and the ceremony when the lawn is impossible. The covered loggia with its brick fireplace holds round tables and tall florals under cover with the garden still in view.
