The Savoy is one of the most famous hotels in the world, and Britain's first luxury hotel, opened on the Strand in 1889 by Richard D'Oyly Carte. Claridge's is an Art Deco legend in the heart of Mayfair, a Maybourne hotel of state banquets and royal receptions, and one of London's most celebrated wedding addresses. Couples marry in its famous Art Deco rooms, licensed for civil ceremonies, led by the English Heritage-listed Ballroom, with its marble and mirrored walls, seating up to 240 and holding up to 500. The French Salon, with its restored mural and gilded cherubs, the elegant Drawing Room, and the intimate mezzanine rooms suit celebrations of every size, dressed by the hotel's own Claridge's Flowers, with a resident wedding choreographer to teach the first dance. Spencer House is an 18th-century private palace at 27 St James's Place, overlooking Green Park in the heart of St James's, built between 1756 and 1766 for John, first Earl Spencer, and restored over ten years from 1985. Let for weddings on an exclusive-use basis, it gives one couple all eight of its first-floor State Rooms, with civil ceremonies licensed in the Great Room, Lady Spencer's Room, the Dining Room and the Palm Room, receptions for up to 450 guests and seated dining for up to 120, catering by an in-house team, and, from May to September, the Terrace looking out over Green Park.

Syon Park is the London estate of the Duke of Northumberland, held by the Percy family since 1594. Weddings take place across Syon House, with its Robert Adam interiors, and the Grade I Great Conservatory, a cast-iron and Bath-stone glasshouse of the late 1820s, set in 200 acres of Capability Brown parkland opposite Kew on the Thames. Ceremonies are held in the Great Hall (up to 154 per the venue brochure) and the State Dining Room (up to 50), with evening receptions under the glass of the Great Conservatory, for up to 160 seated or 200 standing, from April to September. Twenty minutes from central London, and entirely screened from it.

Mandarin Oriental Hyde Park is a five-star grand heritage hotel in a landmark 1902 red-brick Edwardian building at 66 Knightsbridge, its rear facade and terraces facing Hyde Park. Restored by Joyce Wang and home to Dinner by Heston Blumenthal, it hosts grand London weddings in the Ballroom, with floor-to-ceiling park windows and a private garden and terrace, alongside smaller heritage rooms, Michelin dining and 181 park-view rooms and suites.

Shangri-La The Shard, London occupies levels 34 to 52 of Western Europe's tallest building. Weddings are held on level 34, in three river-facing rooms named for the Confucian virtues Ren, Li and Yi, licensed for civil ceremonies and civil partnerships, with the Thames, Tower Bridge and St Paul's through floor-to-ceiling glass. The whole floor can be taken exclusively for up to 110 seated, with 202 rooms and 17 suites above it and the highest hotel pool in Western Europe on level 52.

The Goring is London's only family-owned five-star hotel, a grand Royal Warrant holder in Belgravia moments from Buckingham Palace, where Catherine Middleton stayed the night before the 2011 royal wedding. Couples marry in elegant, fully licensed private rooms, dine in the Garden Room or the Michelin-starred Dining Room, and take drinks in a rare private garden in the centre of the city, for a refined, quintessentially English wedding, with 69 rooms and suites so the party stays in Belgravia.

Strawberry Hill House is Horace Walpole's Gothic Revival villa in Twickenham, built from 1749 and the prototype of Strawberry Hill Gothic. Couples marry in the Gallery, completed in 1763 beneath a gilded papier-mache fan vault and licensed for civil ceremonies for up to 84, then celebrate in the Waldegrave Suite, which seats 105 for the wedding breakfast and holds 200 for an evening party. The ceremony rooms belong to The Strawberry Hill Trust, the charity that restored the house; the Waldegrave Suite is a St Mary's University venue in the same grounds, a short walk across a Grade II* listed garden. The house is hired dry, with catering from an approved list.

Eltham Palace is a medieval great hall of the 1470s, built under Edward IV and known to the young Henry VIII, fused to a 1930s Art Deco mansion built by Stephen and Virginia Courtauld, in nineteen acres of moated gardens at Eltham in the Royal Borough of Greenwich. Cared for by English Heritage, it hosts weddings in the Great Hall, beneath its hammerbeam roof and minstrels' gallery, with drinks and toasts in the circular Art Deco Entrance Hall under its glass dome, and drinks receptions across the gardens. A wedding here is two centuries in a single day.

The Wallace Collection is a national museum in Hertford House on Manchester Square, Marylebone, holding one of the great collections of European art in the world. Out of hours it is hired exclusively for weddings: a symbolic blessing for 140 in the Great Gallery beneath its crimson damask and top-lit vault, dinner for 160 among the Old Masters, dinner and dancing for 140 in the glass-roofed Courtyard, and an afterparty for 300. Catering is dry hire from an accredited supplier list, and there is no accommodation on site.

The Hurlingham Club is a private members’ club of 1869 on the bend of the Thames at Fulham, whose event spaces open to members and non-members alike. Weddings are held in Palm Court, a glasshouse of 43.25 by 10.75 metres under a 43-metre dome, licensed for both civil and religious ceremonies and seating up to 280, with the Sunken Garden for garden ceremonies (licensed civil, up to 150), the Terrace and Rose Walk for drinks and photographs, and the Broomhouse Suite for seated dinners and dinner-dances. Couples hire the event spaces, not the wider 42-acre grounds, which are reserved for members. Catering is in-house under Head Chef Andrew Grahame, and the wedding is licensed for up to 250 guests.

Haymarket Hotel is a Kit Kemp-designed Firmdale luxury design hotel set in a landmark Regency building by John Nash, off Haymarket in London's West End Theatreland. Couples marry in the de Gournay-walled Shooting Gallery, host receptions in the famous 18m underground swimming pool, and dine on Modern European menus by Brumus, all wrapped in bold colour, pattern and contemporary art, with a first-floor terrace and 53 individually designed rooms and suites in the heart of the city.

One Marylebone is a Grade I listed neo-classical former church designed by Sir John Soane in 1828, now a prestigious wedding and events venue in central London. Hired exclusively, it offers the soaring Soane Hall, with its columns, galleries and apse, The Gallery, the Council Chamber and a stone Undercroft, dressed with chandeliers and florals for ceremonies, wedding breakfasts and dramatic receptions, with a private garden terrace, minutes from Regent's Park.

116 Pall Mall is the Institute of Directors' Grade I listed John Nash building in St James's, hired as an events and wedding venue. Every principal space is licensed for civil ceremonies, including the Grand Staircase beneath its fifteen-foot Regency chandelier. The Nash seats 250 for a wedding breakfast and holds 350 standing, the gold-leaf Carlton seats 180, the Waterloo looks over Pall Mall through floor-to-ceiling Georgian windows, and the vaulted Champagne Bar in the original cellars takes the after-party. Up to 1,000 guests fit across the whole building. There are no bedrooms.

Fulham Palace is the former country residence of the Bishops of London, a Grade I listed Tudor palace on the edge of the Thames in Fulham, set in a 13-acre botanic garden. Its Tudor Courtyard and Great Hall date to around 1495, its east front to Bishop Terrick in the 1760s. Weddings unfold across four rooms licensed for civil ceremonies, the open Tudor Courtyard, Bishop Tait's Chapel for blessings, the Chaplain's Marquee and the historic state rooms, catered exclusively by Bovingdons, with a whole botanic garden for drinks and photographs.

The Greenhouses is a collection of private dining glasshouses across two London sites: five in the grounds of One Marylebone, and two in the City at Long Lane, Barbican. Each holds a single long table beneath a canopy of blossom and trailing greenery, and each is hired privately. The Regency Greenhouse at Marylebone is licensed for civil ceremonies, the food is a modern Middle Eastern sharing menu cooked in-house, and weddings are small on purpose: a reception for 8 to 30 guests, with the largest room seating 40.

Tudor Barn Eltham is the last remaining Tudor barn in London, built in 1525 and set within 13 acres of award-winning parkland in SE London. A medieval moat, rose gardens, fountains and bridges surround a barn that has witnessed five centuries of history, taken exclusively by couples marrying in the fully licensed Tudor Gallery and celebrating in the barn.
